About Yourself:
I started off by Buying a biorb 60, and I found it to be inadequate to keep even a few small tropical fish inefficient and a pain to clean. The filter and everything else was poor. I went to a large aquarium store and dove into buying a 260litre tank by Fluval. Doing extensive research on the web and practical experimentation I am now the proud keeper of 35+ various barb fish in a planted tank..and very happy with it. Learning as I go on.
Fish Kept:
Barbus Tetrazona, Green Barbus Tetrazona, Puntius conchonius, Puntius nigrofasciatus, Puntius semifasciolatus, Puntius sachsii, Puntius ticto, Puntius titteya, Puntius oligolepis.
Corals/Plants:
Twisted vallis, Water wisteria, Straight vallis, Java fern, Cryptocoryne, Elodea densa, Java moss, Amazon swords.
Tank Size:
57 gallons
Advice:
Ensure your tank is cycled before introducing too many fish. Best to have a good test set for this purpose and use a Bacteria booster to get things going quicker.

About Yourself:
I am 23 with a daughter whos almost two. I have always loved aquariums and fish and ahve kept many species but only recently started plaanted tanks. For so long i was put out with the idea of spending so much to grow plants but now i know you dont need to. And with a little time, trial and error and basically no income, i have a great tank!I am working on a planted 29 gallon now.
Fish Kept:
6 white cloud mt. minnows,1 rhinohorn goby, 3-4 pond minnows including sticklebacks a baby creek chub and a white sucker fry that will be moved to a larger tank as they grow.various snails, ghost shrimp, and 2 ottocinclus.
Corals/Plants:
Hygrofila difformis, red lotus, native hair grass, mystery native dwarf sword type plants, crypt undulatta, cardinal plant, native large leaf pondweed. native Riccia fluitans, native ludwigia repens.lemna minor, small bits of chara or native muskgrass.
Tank Size:
20 gallons
Advice:
You will sometimes find conflicting advice on keeping planted tanks(particularly lighting) but i have found that trial and error works well and you dont have to spend a lot to have lush plants. eg. my shop light!
Description:
20 gallon planted tank. My first planted tank. Having a limited income, many of the plants are native to michigan where i live. It has a 4 ft shop light over it and a ten gallon beside it.The light has two 32 watt white bulbs.(6500k) I dose with flourish excell evey other day. The substrate is a mix with iron made at a local mom and pop fish shop.No heating.(my home stays pretty warm) A cheap wal mart hang on filter for circulation and biological management though the plants do most of the filtering.

About Yourself:
I keep fish and plants as well as corals.
Fish Kept:
Yellow Marlboro Discus, Neon Tetra Jumbo
Corals/Plants:
Crypts, Valliseria, Amazon swords, ludwigia, java fern, java moss, random plants that get brought back from India and Sri Lanka
Tank Size:
55 gallons
Advice:
Patience.
Description:
55 Gallons
About 7 months old.
5 miscellaneous discus
12 penguin tetras
4 cardinal tetras
1 Angel fish (I relocated other angelfish to another tank, but this one always evades my attempts to net him)
This tank is not against a wall. Instead it's centrally located. On ones side is a couch where I like to lounge. On the other side (rear) of the tank is where my family and I eat breakfast.
Next to this tank is a small Aqueon Evolve 8. We use this for fish quarantine and to develop plants.

Tank Size:

Advice:
plan ahead!
Description:
This is my first planted tank, that i've been slowly working on for just over 6 months. The windelov's fern grows so fast and so big i'm just letting it float until i decide what to do with it. The first few months everything grew so slow i was disappointed but in the past few months everything grows so fast i'm overwhelmed. i've redesigned the tank half a dozen times trying to keep up with the plant growth as it continues to exceed my expecations.

Advice:
Educate yourself.
Read from different sources and correlate information since there's lots of conflicting information on web sites and by people posting on different forums.
Plan ahead.
Where are you going to put the tank? How big of a tank can you realistically place in that location? Will that area support the weight of the aquarium? Estimate ~10 lbs. per gallon which includes substrate and other objects. Are you willing to do 20% water changes of 20 gallons on a 100 gallon tank or would you rather do 20% water changes of 6 gallons on a 20 gallon tank?
How many fish do you expect to see while viewing the aquarium? Size accordingly. Use tool and bounce ideas around with forums members. What type of fish do you want? Are they going to get along together? Do they eat the same food? Can they coexist at the same water temperature and water environment.
Are you going to want live plants? Are you going to pick species that will be able to thrive in the environment that the fish will live in? Are you willing to trim and care for plants as well as the fish?
More questions than answers.
These are some of the questions you should research and have answers to before you buy your equipment. You then need to do your research on the different type of equipment to house your new world.
Enjoy!
