African leaf fish (leopard ctenopoma in a different tank), 10 harlequin rasbora, a Sparkling Gourami, and 3 misc. cory cat's,6 corydoras habrosus, 4 brilliant rasboras, a few otto's and unknown amount of pearl blue shrimp and a few red cherry shrimp.
Corals/Plants:
i have are a Java Fern, flame moss,a few Bacopa Monnieri , Anacharis, Aglaonema simplex (Borneo Sword), Twisted Vallisneria , Red Temple, Ludwigia repens that i got from a pond down the street, Ludwigia repens x arcuata , Echinodorus parviflorus "Tropica", red tiger lotus, crypt. retospirals, and more now a days...

Advice:
I'm not by any means an expert at this, but as far as I've learned the light spectrum makes a big difference...ie - how hot the bulb is burning (5000K, 6500K, 10000K [K stands for Kelvins]) as far as Fluorescents are concerned. or 1.5+ watt per gal is a good start but thats probably a bare min.

Update of my tank aprox. 7mo. old! grew up real quickly! Just added some pearl blue and red cherry shrimp in the tank to control algae. crypts are back and coming in nicely!

About Yourself:
Small 30g tank at age 12 then left for a bit.....came back with my current tank 5 years ago and started to get into plants and aquascaping heavily. Going for Discus now with a total rebuild late 2008 in my new home...pics when its grown in and more than my one new discus.
Fish Kept:
roseline rasboras, gold nugget pleco, cardinal tetras, betta,
juli corys, otociniclus, gouramis...various others.
Corals/Plants:
zostrafolia(star grass) vallisnaria, tiger lotus, java fern/moss, many bulbs....again various others.
Wish I could find a low growing plant to make a carpet with but selection is limited here in Vermont, importing plants is restricted.

Go big...as big as you can!
Leave it be more than you mess with it...you'll have more fun with it..and you wont go crazy trying to make it JUST right!!!
I envy Mr. Amano's setups but you have to know what your limits are!

Do not limit your funding to start with the hobby, try one by one product until it became successful, don`t forget to do weekly maintaining the tanks if not the condition of the tank will be bad and hard for you to maintaining it. You will also felt mad and doesn`t have the passion anymore to the hobby. Don`t overstocked the tank with a lots of fish. Good luck
